ALPACA LOW WASTE FEEDER BOX

 

Why a low waste alpaca feeder?  It keeps their fleece cleaner and free of hay...well most of it. You know how they still love to roll around in stuff.

My husband and I had a herd of 25 alpacas back in 2005 when we lived in Utah.

As I started to learn how to use their fiber to spin into yarn, I realized the hay situation in the fiber was out of control.

At that time, I did not have the tools or the knowledge to deal with this issue.  

So my clever husband designed and made a low waste feeder box to keep the hay waste out of their fiber.

Why? Well, if you’ve ever watched an alpaca eat, they bury their heads deep down in the hay to get the tasty bits. They have hay on their head, turn and look at their friend and shower hay down onto their backs. The feeder box blocks them, if you will, from getting their head in the hay, but allows them to still easily acess the hay to eat.

The box is just the right size for a bale of hay and can be adjusted as needed. We’ve been asked many times if sheep or goats can use this. You, as an owner, need to decide if this is something that would be right for your animals. But for alpacas... it’s perfect!

NOTE:  Of importance is to note that because of the PVC and they rub against it, this may cause a bit of fur to rub off their noses.  If you are going to show your alpacas this may be a concern.
