HOW TO WASH OR SCOUR WOOL

Scouring wool is not like doing laundry

💕It is an art with many variables involved.

💕 It's akin to making sourdough bread...if a variable is skewed your bread is doomed.

💕If you are having issues scouring, keep ruining wool, or are brand new to scouring keep reading.

💕My book and even more so my online scouring certification course will tell you more than you ever thought you needed to know about scouring fiber.

💕Info you won't find on blogs, youtube videos, or other fiber groups.

💕The proof is in the pudding, uh er, fiber. This is some mohair that was sent to me because the grower could not get it clean.  I scoured it only once using the principles in the book, The Art is Washing Wool, Mohair and Alpaca by Mary Egbert.

Here are the variables if not correct can spell disaster or at the very least less than stellar results.

1. Water

2. Soap

3. Handling

4. Process

5. When to know if to pre-soak or not to pre-soak

6. pH

7. Wool grade

8. Mohair

9. Fiber that has no lanolin such as Alpaca, Camel or cashmere.

Here is the process to scouring a fairly "clean" wool, ie., no caked on mud, which we can fix, but for another day.

1.  Scour once

2. Scour twice if a fine grade wool

3.  Rinse

4.  Dry

That's it!

If you are scouring three, four or even five times and still can't get the lanolin out there are reasons for that. It's not that your wool is extra with lanolin, it's your process that is the issue.

If your wool feels super scratchy when you are done scouring, but it was nice and soft before the soap can be the issue.

If your wool is felted after scouring you are handling it roughly or there are water temp issues.

No matter if you follow the correct steps your wool just never gets clean. Your water may be the issue, not you.

See what I mean? So many variables and so many issues that the book and the course address head on.  Once you know the issues you can correct and come out smelling like clean wool.
