I love carding textured batts. The texture comes from fiber that has a bit of oomph such as pulled sari silk, cotton nepps or even mulberry silk noils. That oomph can be the thickness of the fiber or even the 3-dimensional form of the fiber, giving your finished yarn a really unique look and yarn that looks tweedy. Though there are many ways to make a tweed yarn, this is one of my favorite ways.
The pulled sari silk is such a favorite of mine because a colorway will have a blend of several colors in the roving. There are multiple thicknesses of silk threads in the pulled sari roving giving it more interest in the batt and spun yarn not to mention the sheen that silk offers.
Replace the Soffsilk® with the pulled sari silk to make a Confetti Cake Batt for a fun, textured batt. Watch the video below.
Here is a pretty in pink batt made with some of the pulled sari and some cotton nepps. I love the little white pieces..almost like snow or stars. This was carded on my Strauch Mad Battr.
This batt was carded on my Brother Supercard with the fibers you see. I just LOVE these ones.
I used yellow Merino and some of the pulled sari silk to blend up this happy batt. Love the pop of color!
Here is some yarn spun from a batt that was blended with the pulled sari silk. So pretty eh?
This is the Sun Kissed colorway with yellow Merino
blended with pulled sari silk. The yellow yarn in the photo below is the Sun Kissed blend spun up. How gorgeous is that?
Pulled Sari silk not only adds texture, but is adds softness and pops of color that make the most unique yarns. Get out your Color Grid card and choose darker wool bases and maybe a lighter pulled silk for something that has never been done before. Go a little crazy, be bold and brave.
